Communicate 1.1.2- Laws of Commuinication
According to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act or (FERPA), teachers should not ever discuss a student’s grades in an email. Instead, in the email, request that the parent call in order to discuss the student’s grades. In addition, no personal information should ever be sent in an email. Teachers should not share any student information with anyone other than the parent or guardian and never to third parties regarding student progress. FERPA protects the privacy of students’ educational records and teachers must adhere to this federal law.
Fair Use rules should be followed when using copyrighted material. Not all work, images, words and videos have to be original. When using online material, pay attention to the Fair Use policy that allows the use of limited excerpts for educational purposes.
It is a important to cite all materials that are used. To avoid any confusion, or to protect myself from violating copyright laws, I only use open educational resources (OER) or multi-media open educational resources such as MERLOT.
